IESI Acquires Recycling Facility in North Austin

IESI Corporation (“IESI”), a subsidiary of IESI-BFC Ltd., announced today it has acquired Central Texas Secure Shredding and its recycling facility in Pflugerville, Texas. Central Texas Secure Shredding provides secure document destruction processes that include the collection of documents in locked containers, transportation in locked vehicles, mixing of documents from multiple sources prior to shredding, baling and recycling of the materials.
11 Austin roads on ‘most congested’ list

A four-mile stretch through downtown Austin on I-35 is the fourth most congested road in the state, according to a Texas Department of Transportation listing of 100 worst trafficked routes.
TxDot, Texas A&M University and Texas Transportation Institute researchers used more specific data in the latest listing released Wednesday, such as actual traffic speeds rather than estimates, according to officials.
Austin reveals track layout for 2012 US Grand Prix

The design of the Texas circuit which will stage Formula 1′s return to the United States has been revealed.
Construction of the Hermann Tilke-designed circuit in Austin is scheduled to begin in December with the US Grand Prix due back on the calendar in 2012.
The 3.4-mile track aims to blend features of classic tracks, such as Silverstone, with modern facilities.
Texas House halts plans to shred travel records

Texas House officials have halted plans to shred legislator travel records after prosecutors asked that they be preserved as part of a criminal inquiry into possible abuses at the state capitol.
The office of Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg, which oversees public corruption investigations in Austin, asked the Texas House of Representatives to preserve records that were headed for the shredders Wednesday as a new fiscal years begins. The House only keeps five years’ worth of travel records submitted by members, but officials are holding on to all of them now that a criminal probe is under way.
Some Katrina victims homeless after Austin fire

Some displaced Katrina victims from New Orleans lost their homes again in an apartment complex fire in Austin on the fifth anniversary of the hurricane.
Authorities say at least half a dozen people were injured during the blaze Sunday.
The cause of the fire, which damaged or destroyed more than a dozen units, is sought. More than 40 residents were displaced.

Judge says DeLay can get fair trial in Austin

A visiting district judge Wednesday ruled former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay can get a fair trial in Travis County despite lingering Democratic anger against the former national Republican leader.
District Judge Pat Priest said the U.S. Constitution requires a case to be tried where the crime occurred unless there is unusual prejudice against the defendant. Priest said he believes the former Sugar Land-area representative can be protected in the jury selection process.
Swindon striker Charlie Austin not fazed by expectation

Swindon Town striker Charlie Austin says he can deal with the pressure of scoring goals in his second season in League One.
The 21-year-old made the move from non-league Poole in July 2009 to find the net 20 times in 32 starts last term.
“Everyone was talking about second-season syndrome – even the Hartlepool fans in the first game were giving me stick,” Austin told BBC Wiltshire.

National Guardsmen Address Key Challenges In Austin

Thousands of National Guardsmen are in Austin this weekend for an annual conference. Many Texas National Guardsmen have been returning this summer after serving in Iraq or Afghanistan and more are preparing to leave next month. As KUT’s Erika Aguilar reports those changes in the war are key challenges for the Texas National Guard.
The National Guard Association of the United States will be in town until Tuesday (8/24). Kevin McColaugh works for the organization lobbying Congress for more money.
