Austin Diaper got the only goal of the game as Ely overcame Brantham at the Unwin Ground. The Robins, who are now fighting for second place as Wroxham have been crowned champions, put in an excellent showing, with Richard Chadwick doing well in attack and defender Adam Murray keeping Brantham’s prolific Ollie Mann quiet. Austin falls to St. Paul Johnson in state quarterfinals

Austin battled back from 12 points down with 3 1/2 minutes left to get within two points in the final minute, but the Packers eventually lost 71-66 to St.  Paul Johnson in the quarterfinals of the Class AAA state boys high school basketball tournament today at Williams Arena. More >

Austin College baseball falls to Hendrix

Hendrix scored four runs over the sixth and seventh innings to open up a tight game against the Austin College baseball team on Sunday, as the Warriors dropped the ‘Roos 9-5 at Baker Field. The ‘Roos are now 2-13 overall and 1-5 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on the year.

Hendrix jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the top of the first, but the ‘Roos answered back in the bottom half of the inning when Mason Leech scored on a throwing error to square things up. However, the Warriors would score one run in each of the next two innings and add another in the top of the fifth to make it a 4-1 lead, but Austin College would bring one run home in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Chase Muder to make it a 4-2 game.

Austin Peay wins OVC women’s opener in double overtime

Austin Peay’s Whitney Hanley said she didn’t want to wake up Thursday with no basketball left to play. And thanks to Hanley, the bottom-seeded Governors are still alive in the OVC women’s tournament. More >

LSU shortstop Austin Nola named to awards

LSU senior shortstop Austin Nola is one of thirty candidates nominated for 2012 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, LSU announced Thursday. The award honors Division I senior athletes who also excel in community, classroom, character and competition.

Nola, a product of Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, has a 3.2 GPA as a sports administration major and was named to the 2011 Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. He was also voted to the 2011 SEC Community Service Team as the leader of LSU baseball squad’s philanthropic efforts.

College Students Compete in Wheelchair Basketball

Austin College students will step up to their wheelchairs this week for a wheelchair basketball competition to raise money for charity. The wheelchair basketball tournament will culminate in a 10-minute face-off with a faculty team during halftime at the men’s basketball game at 8 p.m. Friday, February 17. More >
